There comes one moment in everyone’s life when a challenging decision must be effected. Madrone High School principal James Malone’s moment is complicated by the explosive forces he faces in heading a multi-racial high school in the 1960s––drugs, sexual promiscuity, and turbulent racial relations. Madrone High is located in the San Gabriel Valley east of Los Angeles where race riots flared from Pasadena to Pomona. Prejudices presage a search for understanding. Accompanying the roller coaster action is a love story as Malone, a widower, finds a partner in a teacher, Sally Fielder, a former actress with a surprising past.

About the Author

John McGrew John McGrew is a retired career educator who covered the bases from high school teacher through district superintendent. He was a high school principal in the San Gabriel Valley near Los Angeles in the turbulent 60s. During the era race riots broke out from Pasadena to Pomona. McGrew, a Midwest native, planned a service career after graduating from the United States Naval Academy. A temporary disability following duty in the Philippines, Japan and Korea during the Korean War led to his education career. He has parented three non-fiction books and fathered three children. McGrew currently resides in San Diego.
