About the Book

The story, the first in a projected series of three parts, opens in the tropical Lakeland of a planet many thousands of light years from Earth. The planet Cymmeron, colonized very early in the history of human expansion into space, its origins lost in myth and legend, has at last achieved “world peace” – not so much a consequence of any intrinsic pacifism on the part of its inhabitants, as of a sparse population thinly scattered amidst a world rich in natural resources. Then, a warning comes down from the north that the earthly paradise is threatened – by whom or what remains for the moment unknown.

The warning comes to Alin of Ehrensbi, a relative newcomer to the Lakes. Alin suffers from a strange erasure of his memory. He knows that he was not born in the Lakes. Yet, as far as he can remember, his life seems to begin at about the age of twelve, when he was living in the Lakeland with his father, who has since disappeared. Apart from a few intriguing fragments, he recalls almost nothing of his life before this time; and the one man who could tell him, the bearer of the warning, is under an oath never to do so.

Alin must find out for himself. Together with his companion Lynne, he journeys to the north, on the way finding that Cymmeron is a far stranger place than its isolationist inhabitants ever imagined it to be. The nature of the danger threatening the free people is revealed – in a particularly forceful manner. It is an evil as old as humanity itself, but one too long forgotten or ignored by a people for whom life has been too easy.

The quest for allies in their adversity leads Alin back to his birthplace, to unravel the mystery and tragedy of his own past. Somewhere allies can be found: somewhere beyond the confines of Cymmeron’s own system, at the other end of the Galaxy as far as they know. Finding them will take Lynne and Alin back by the way their ancestors came – an adventure of which they cannot yet know the conclusion.
