About the Book

The Third Avenue Elevated Line was part of New York’s earliest mass transit system. It originally ran from the tip of lower Manhattan and linked to the South Bronx at 149th Street and continued north, ending at GunHill and White Plains Road. On February 16,1956 the last steel pillars of Manhattan’s famed Third Avenue El were removed. By 1972 all that remained in operation of the obsolete structure was a five and half mile section in the Bronx, it was razed the fol lowing year. The elevated cars, support columns and tracks have all disappeared. The photographs in this book document the Third Avenue EL’s final year of service.
