About the Book

An Apartment in Paris is an invitation to share the year 1980-1 with us, an American couple and their eighteen year-old daughter. It reflects on France and the French, their sense of neighborhood, relations with shopkeepers, memories of previous visits to Paris, bemused frustrations of the French language, challenges of working in Paris, the elusive pursuit of French national character, the charms and poignancy of street life, the ghosts of war, perceptions of monuments and museums, the idiosyncrasies of city sports, the mystique of hiking outside Paris, and the unforeseen revelations of our tour de France through Normandy, Brittany, the west coast, the Tarn canyon, and Burgundy. In contrast to many books on France which present thoughts on food, this offers food for thought about France and ourselves.

About the Author

The author of several books on German strategy and policy before and during World War I, Lancelot Farrar is now working on 19th and 20th century European nationalism and lives in Washington DC near the daughters who feature in this story.
