About the Author

The author arrived in New York in 1954 on a one-way ticket band carrying his worldly possessions in two suitcases, a backpack and $550 in cash, his life savings. Most important of all, he had an Immigrant Visa, he was free to look for a job. He did not have to go to Ellis Island, indeed, he felt neither poor nor oppressed the world was his oyster, maybe! Holger Nissen had not been unsuccessful in his native Denmark but the German occupation had prevented any travel. From years of reading he knew there was bigger world out there! He was ready to give it a try and his English-he-thought-adequate. His book, however, is not about his subsequent life and career in the U.S.A. Although touched upon in the last few chapters, rather he endeavors to cover in a series of vignettes his early life, schooling, apprenticeship, family and relatives as well as time spent as a scout leader. Participation in the Underground and his service in the Royal Guard and contacts with the royal family. Happily retired, the author lived in a Kendal Life Care Community in Pennsylvania. He and his partner, Sally French also has a camp in the Adirondack.
