About the Book

An old porch swing becomes a special place for a child and his grandmother, whom he calls “Ginny” (pronounced like guinea pig). From counting fireflies to dealing with cancer, they experience life’s most simple and most difficult moments in the comfort of the swing. The precious bond between them provides love and laughter and helps them grow. Told from the child’s perspective, these tender memories will surely warm the hearts of children and adults alike.

About the Author

Brenda Jenkins is a retired educator with thirty years of service to public schools. She is married and has two children. In the fall of 2011, Brenda walked a 3-day walk for breast cancer. To fight boredom while training, she created rhymes about special times with her grandson. That spring, these memories took on a new perspective. Brenda was diagnosed with breast cancer. During the months of recuperation from surgeries, she began to recall the rhymes and write them down, and with encouragement from friends and family, she wrote The Swing. In anticipation of what lay ahead, Brenda decided to add her perception of how she might explain her condition to her grandson. Thankfully, treatment was avoided by having surgery. However, this part of the book was included as a reminder of the strength we gain from our bonds with others.
