Point Last Seen is a training manual for search and rescue volunteers. It provides the reader real insight into wildlands search and rescue in New York State, as it is implemented and administered by the New York State Forest Rangers.
It provides valuable information on a variety of vital subjects such as Incident Administration, Personal Safety, Casualty Management, Tracking and Sign Cutting, Land Navigation, Climbing Techniques and Field Communications.
Only the Search Incident Administration portion of the book is New York State specific.Most of the material has wide application anywhere wildlands search and rescue activiites are carried on.
About the Author
John Washburn is a retired educator. He has been a Water Safety Instructor and a First Aid Instructor Trainer for the Red Cross, and an active member of the National Ski Patrol System. He was also a SCUBA diving Instructor with N.A.U.I.I. and worked the State Police underwater recovery teams in Michigan. In 1992 he retired from the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, having taught navigation and search and rescue skills to small boat crews, and operated patrol boats in New York Harbor for fifteen years. He has served as Training Officer and Field Manager of Search Team 5-1, in the Adirondacks for the last eighteen years. Point Last Seen evolved from his work with this group.
