About the Book
Something wonderful happened in the process of writing this book. I found myself reconnecting to, as Phillips Brooks calls them, the great truths that we believe, the broad and general consecrations of our lives which we have made, the large objects of our desire, the great hopes and impulses that keep us at our work. Brooks refers to these as the backgrounds of our lives against which the foregrounds of our lives are set. Brooks continues, to most the actual immediate circumstances of life are so pressing that (we) forget the everlasting truths and forces by which those circumstances must be made dignified and strong. Many clues tell us that this drift away from the backgrounds of our lives is at work, but our sinful nature makes them easy to ignore. We must be careful to stay connected to the truths that form the backgrounds against which the foregrounds of our lives are set. It is vital for us to remember, I lift up my eyes to the hills-- where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. Ps 121:1-2 May we all lift our eyes to Him.
