About the Book

This story is about life in an Irish neighborhood during the dark days of World War Two and the impact of the war on the lives of the people “on the home front.” Because of the curiosity of his ten-year-old grandson, Jack Rossiter begins to recall long-forgotten memories from that dramatically different world of his boyhood. The story deals with the humor of the escapades of young boys and the sadness of lost sons and fathers. Values were taught by example, and neighbors were considered family. In fact, this was a time when all Americans were family.

About the Author

Phil Martin is recently retired from the family manufacturing business. He is married and has three daughters, ages 29 through 35, all employed in various professions. Phil resides in western New York where he grew up. His college education was at the University of Maryland, European Division, during a three-year tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force in France during the early 1960s. His early education began on the streets of Irish South Buffalo in the 1940s and ’50s. In his youth, Phil developed an admiration for such authors as Joyce Kilmer, John Steinbeck, Ernie Pyle, and, more recently, Frank McCourt. He is already at work on his next story.
