About the Author

About the Author Benjamin Vallotton Born in Alsace, France, Benjamin Vallotton was the renowned author of a number of French books, some of them acclaimed by the Académie Française. Many of Vallotton’s novels deal with the problems faced by the Alsatians caught in the middle of wars between France and Germany. About the Translator Elizabeth Johnson Cornillon Born in Newtown, Massachusetts in 1909, Elizabeth Cornillon graduated from Mount Holyoke College. A Fulbright Scholarship led her to study French at the “École Normale Supèrieure” of Sèvres, France. After a brief return to the United States where she taught French at the Knox School in Cooperstown, New York, she returned to France to wed a young French aircraft engineer. During the war she taught at the American School in Paris. During the long hard years of the war she embarked on the translation of "Feuilles dans le Vent" (Leaves in the Wind), to find a positive and challenging project to help her through the hard times. After the war she and her French husband returned to America where she spoke to American audiences about the sufferings France had been experienced and devoted herself to her family, raising her children, personal writing, and teaching French.
