About the Book

This book explains divorce to a child who might be too young to remember when the divorce occurred but is now old enough to ask the question "What is divorce?"

My husband and I were eating dinner one night when my 6 year old step son informed me that he calls me his second mom. With a sparkle in my eye, I told him how much that meant to me as I loved him very much and had loved him since he was two years old. Just before his second birthday, his mother disclosed to his father that she was gay. That was four years ago. Since everything has been amicable and a complete 50/50, my step son has known nothing else. We had hoped we had escaped the questions and now it was staring us in the face; “you and my mom are still a little married, though, right dad?” The answer we gave made him pretty sad. Rob was pretty firm in his answer that he and his son’s mother were not married…at all…in any way, shape or form. And we knew we had some explaining to do. We researched for an age appropriate response. We went to his guidance counselor and to the library but all had books with the divorce happening in the here and now. Not an answer for when the child might be too young to remember the initial event but now old enough to ask “what is divorce?” That is how this book was conceived. We hope that it helps you as it has helped us.
