About the Book
Things could not be more rotten for an eight-year-old boy named Melvin Cotton. He is bored with the gray on that bleak March day. As the story begins Melvin decides to pull himself out of his doldrums by climbing to the peak of a craggy rock where he discovers: a one-eared dog, a crooked mill and a very artistic hunchback named Ivor.
When the people of Salisbury try to run the hunchback out of town, after being mesmerized by a greedy realtor, Melvin comes to his rescue.
By the use of cinematic illustrations, Doucette evokes the Saturday matinee monster movies but turns the familiar images on their head. The reader is confronted with their own prejudice when they find out that the real monster is not the hunchback and that his curse is not his back. This is a story about acceptance, tolerance, self-expression, friendship and love.
This story not only promotes acceptance but also celebrates the differences in us all.
