About the Book
Dear Jo is set in a small town during World War II. The hero, Betsy, writes letters in her diary as to a friend in whom she can confide her problems, her quandaries, her attempts to deal with a puzzling adult world. Betsy gets into trouble with the best of intentions. The town, the river, the war, and anti-Semitism shape events in Betsy’s life as do her experiences with her mother and father, her older sister Jane, and her friends, especially Greta, whose family escaped from Nazi Germany.
Although the events take place some fifty years ago, they deal with questions relevant to children of all times. Why do I do what I do? What kind of person am I? Can I fail to be “good” and still be a good person?
