About the Author
Edward Chalfant is best known for his biographical trilogy about Henry Adams. Titles:—Both Sides of the Ocean, Better in Darkness, Improvement of the World. Born in 1921, he majored in English Honors at Dartmouth, served during World War II as an Air Force historian, earned an M.A. in English at Columbia, taught at Dartmouth for two years, earned a Ph.D. in American Civilization at the University of Pennsylvania, and in 1953 joined the faculty at Hofstra. There, from 1959 to 1988, he taught parallel full-year courses for upper class students in American Literature and in Shakespeare—an unusual assignment. He is currently editing The Education of Henry Adams by Henry Adams, A Better Version, under the auspices of the Massachusettes Historical Society. Also, he is the author of a book parallel to this one, titled New Entryways to Ten Important Stories by Henry James to be published by Xlibris.
