About the Book

Saul T. is a former pilot who has unwittingly stumbled onto a covert plan to overthrow the government. Saul’s new-found knowledge is threatening enough that a highly-placed federal official kidnaps his wife Paula in an effort to control him.

But even before Saul can attempt to rescue his wife, he finds that the ground rules for everyday life have suddenly changed. Amidst a wave of chaos that descends on the world, a strange new acquaintance, a certain Mr. Jerome P. Mahoney, tries to explain this new reality -- and the dilemma it presents:

“If I told you that black is now white, Saul T., or that up is down, or that everything you’ve ever believed about mankind and about yourself is a fairy tale and a lie…would you be able to assimilate that, Saul T.?”

Saul, like the reader, is skeptical and disbelieving. Talk like this belongs in Star Trek or The Matrix or maybe Invasion of the Body Snatchers—not in a thriller where good vs. evil seems so readily defined. And yet . . . Saul finds himself swept up in a puzzling conundrum as he realizes that he may well be a pawn in a high-stakes battle of wits.

This is where the twist in Mr. Mahoney Has Left The Building surfaces. This is where Saul hears that a band of dangerously manipulative creatures is somehow behind his wife’s kidnapping and all the strange disorder that has visited the world. Moreover, Saul is told that the outcome of his quest to rescue his wife could determine whether the earth itself will live or die. Even as Saul and Mr. Mahoney pursue Paula’s kidnappers on a frantic cross-country chase, he resists such an absurd proposition. Nonetheless, the fact remains that things now go bump not only in the night…but all day long as well.

Unlike science fiction, Mr. Mahoney Has Left The Building is firmly anchored in a very recognizable, everyday reality. It's a lucid, literate novel that adroitly mixes suspense with humor -- all the while blending intriguing speculation with a down-to-earth sensibility. It is a dramatic thriller written for a mainstream audience…yet it goes well beyond that. There is a tantalizing, multi-faceted depth to the characters, the action, and the novel itself.
