About the Book

This book depicts the last year of Hitler’s Third Reich as it was seen through the eyes of a prisoner of war.  From the 27th of May in1944 the experiences of this POW are vividly described.  You will share the experiences of a “Kriegie” as he lives in three different POW camps and spends days on the roads fleeing the advance of Russian forces in the latter days of the war, right down to liberation by Patton’s forces in those final weeks of World War II.

About the Author

Many years ago a young mother pointed out an ungainly looking machine to her small son, Bobby. As they watched, the World War I trainer rose into the air, laying the seeds of a life long career in aviation, one that led Robert Cotterell into the military and a year as a prisoner of war. After WW II he resumed his job with the Douglas Aircraft Company. There, although still in the Airforce Reserve after 9 years of active duty, he worked in Field Service instructing foreign and domestic airline customers of new transport aircraft. After retiring he and his wife Pat moved to Oregon. Active in civic affairs he spent 12 years as Mayor of Myrtle Creek, and enjoyed writing a column in the local newspaper. This book is the result of an endeavor to make his year as a prisoner of war real and interesting for his grandchildren.
