About the Book

Tim Land lives by himself in his shack out in the country.  His only companion is Chimp, his pet chipmunk.  After taking into consideration the advice offered by his friend, Barney, he decides to sell the place, all except two acres by Crawfish Creek and move to Asheville, North Carolina in search of a wife.

Tim learns quickly that living in the city is different.  He finds a job in a gas mask plant while on the lookout for a suitable wife.  He gets into trouble with the law and is helped out by his new friend, Bobby Tripp, who the night before was fighting with him.

Bobby talks Tim into attending the annual dance, even though he can’t dance a step.  Chimp gets him into trouble and he has to leave the dance.  Later, at the hospital, he gets a chance to talk with Janet Walker who has moved to Asheville from West Virginia.  They become good friends and spend a lot of time together along with Bobby and Sue Smith .  Gwen and Billy are also present most of the time.

After a time, Tim and Janet decide to get married.  They are surprised to learn their friends are planning the same.  They get together and set the date for a triple wedding!

Before the wedding can take place, the men receive their draft notices.  They must leave two days before the wedding.  Dejected, they arrive at the army base where Chimp promptly gets them into trouble.  Unknown to the boys, the girls decide to join the army to be near them and are sent to the same base.

The boys learn of their presence on the base and are finally given permission to have meals with them.  They once again plan the wedding.  It is to be the day after graduation from basic training.

The day before graduation, the boys decide to inspect a tank.  When they wind up shooting at a general and demolishing a grandstand, they are quickly shipped to an island the army suspects is occupied with Japanese.  Sgt. Banks, their sergeant, is sent with them.

When the girls learn of their disappearance, they enter the general’s house at midnight and force him to agree to send them to the island.  When they arrive and are captured by the Japanese, it seems almost certain that they will never return to Crawfish Creek as husband and wife.
