About the Book

KEEPING AHEAD OF WINTER –4100 Nautical Miles Inside America by Ruth Silnes is a human-interest story. Experience the catastrophes and victories alongside the fifty-year-old author and her new husband as they honeymoon in 1965 in their 38-foot powerboat through inland waters from Illinois to Florida. Her journey is both romantic and life changing. See the sights, feel the fears and triumphs. They are caught in torpedo practice in the Chesapeake Bay, shot at in Chicago, and their boat is flooded with gasoline in vast Lake Huron. Enjoy the camaraderie of people they meet from Henry Ford II who act as their dock-boy to a generous Bayou woman who gave them the fish they saw her catch, and an eighty-year-old yachting couple that made them feel like youngsters. Laugh and cry. Boaters relate to the story, others live vicariously a life unfamiliar to them.
