About the Book

SHORT STORIES BY 12 NEW YORK WRITERS

Foreward

The Circle Y came together as a refuge for New York writers in 1994. Originally, seven of us were introduced in Alice Elliott Dark’s class, “Writing Through,” at the Writer’s Voice of the West Side Y. Alice’s class came at a time when many of us were just beginning to take our writing seriously. We were finding our voices, learning to tell a story, we were eager and looking for a nourishing atmosphere in which to present and critique our early drafts. The Circle Y became that place.

Over the years we’ve met in offices, cafes, apartments and bars all over Manhattan. Members have come and gone, but the group remains a constant, and for some of us, our longest relationship outside of family. We’ve helped each other out of writer’s block and into publication; we’ve celebrated finished novels and lamented lost deals.

Above all, we’ve persisted. The Circle Y Anthology is a way of bringing together our diverse voices. Many of these stories were discussed and revised with the help of the group. For some writers it is a first publication; for others it adds to the roster.

We hope it is only the beginning, an introduction to writers whose work you’ll return to again and again.

Welcome to The Circle Y.
