Douglas is a young golf professional who is asked by his employer to help a group of young adults on a white-water raft trip in Northern Washington. Although Peter is a loner, he agrees since he has considerable experience piloting rafts in turbulent waters.
During the trip, he gets reacquainted with Karen West, a nurse, who he knew as a child. They find that the strange affinity that they had in their childhood years is still strong Karen helps Peter gain confidence in his golf game on tour and helps bring him out of his loner shell. As their romance brightens, Peter surprises himself by thinking about marriage. When he proposes, Karen accepts with love but attaches conditions that Peter finds unusual, but with which he agrees. The proposal was made as he joined Karen and her friends on a boat trip on Puget Sound. When they return, the pilot of the boat, Karen's friend, is critically hurt in a motorcycle accident. Karen's actions in stemming the flow of blood is instrumental in saving the young man's life. As an aftermath of that episode, Karen learns things about herself that affects her very existence and her relationship with Peter. The path they follow to unravel the mystery has many twists and turns. The answer changes their lives forever.
