About the Author
Mildred Helena Styles Johnson was born February 4, 1909, in Waco, Georgia. She was the third child in a family of ten. She married Beauie Johnson on November 8, 1925. They were married 61 years. He died on February 25, 1986. They have three children: Daphine, Lance, and Diane. At the age of 94, Mildred began writing the history of Buncombe Community at the request of many. Having lived most of her 96 years in or around the Buncombe area, she is her own best source of information, even though she has done extensive research. She has used her considerable skills of organization and compilation to make a comprehensive and accurate history for generations to come. The book is titled “Buncombe Folks”. Mildred has previously written two other books: “Mildred’s Memoirs” and “The History of Gospel Music in Haralson and Carroll Counties”. She also wrote a weekly newspaper column for many years. In addition to being an author, Mildred is an accomplished soloist, pianist, music teacher, and songwriter. She has written over 100 songs. Most of her songs which refl ect her deep religious beliefs, have been published in gospel music songbooks. Her musical talents have been recognized with numerous awards. She sang in a ladies quartet for 19 years which did concerts and radio work. The 2004 Georgia State Singing Convention was dedicated to her. Because of her hard work and dedication to excellence, Mildred is truly an inspiration to people who know her and she will continue to leave a legacy which will affect peoples’ lives for years to come through her writing and her music. by: Charlotte Ellis, Buncombe Resident
