About the Book

About the Author

Milena Soukal was born and educated in Slovenia, a small European country , located under the Alps. She fled her native country with her brother and two sisters at the end of World II, after it was decided in Yalta to put Slovenia under the “Iron Curtain”. Like many other Slovenian Anticommunists she spent five years in Displaced Camps in Austria. There she got married to her husband Jerome. Her sons Jerome and Frank were born to her in camp. The young family got finally permission to emigrate to United States in 1950. Their new home in Chicago was the dream come true. The addition of two more sons, Matt and Juri made Milena very busy mother. All this time she was writing the poetry, at first in Slovenian language – her two books of poetry got published and the last one was recipient of award for the best book of the year. Slovenia became the free country, therefore she honored some overlooked poets and writers with publishing their work. For her children and grandchildren Milena wrote this book of poems in English language with the anticipation that her story in verses will bring them the insight into the Grandma’s world.
