About the Book
Wilbur McCartha is a native of Lexington County, South Carolina. Wilbur’s dream was to publish a book …. and knew that one day he would. Wilbur is 89 years old and now is the proud author of Halcyon – The Quiet and The Still
It is a book about growing up in Lexington County. One of nine children, taking Tin Tub Baths on a Saturday night, Taking Buggy to Church on Sunday mornings and about Homecomings. He recounts The Peanut Picking parties, The Ice Cream Socials, and the day Sam the work mule died in Eulogy to a Mule.
HALCYON is a compilation of thoughts, memories and meditations. One man’s reflection on Friendships, Life’s Experiences, and The Winter of Life. One man’s memory of Horse Collars and Wagon Wheels and Two Rutted Roads and one man’s view on Perpetuity, Eternity and Infinity.
As one who served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Air Force Reserves, Wilbur shares his thoughts on war and freedom. He tells of history in First American Plane to Land in Tokyo at End of World War II as he relives the anxiety and anticipation of the unknown. He recounts of his search for Flanders Fields and his thoughts of Made in the USA.
Wilbur reminisces of his days at McCartha Tree Farm. His love of the outdoors and of the land that inspired Wilbur to develop one of South Carolina’s first cultivated Christmas Tree Farms. Some stories tell the tales of his trees that have graced the halls of the Governor’s mansion, City Halls, Children’s homes and South Carolina churches.
HALCYON is not just a book. It is a compilation of history, an anthology of memories, a collection of life. May the reader reminisce and recollect their own days of Halcyon.
