About the Book

Martha Baker was a very average Midwestern girl. She wrote in her journal nearly every day of her life beginning at the age of nine. Author Thomas Isaac Franklin served as both editor of Martha's journals and writer of this chronicle of her early life. All of the most fantastic events and deeply felt emotions in the book came directly from her journals. Her entries were often graphic, uncensored, and raw. They are intended for mature readers. Franklin had to supplement the sometimes-sparse journal entries with research. He interviewed Martha's relatives, friends, and noteworthy characters that appear in her journals.
