About the Book

This is a true story. Midnight’s first home was with a sweet young woman and her young daughter. Tragedy struck, and the young mother died. The young daughter had to move in with her grandmother. The grandmother could not care for the child and a new puppy. Midnight was left outside and given free rein of the neighborhood. Every day, when the little girl would walk to school, the puppy would follow her. That is when my pre-K class was visited by the little black puppy. This is the story of what happens after the puppy showed up at school.

About the Author

Cathy Taylor McKoin was born in 1958 in the small southern city of Morgan City, Louisiana. She graduated from Morgan City High School in 1976 then earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary kindergarten education from Nicholls State University. For thirteen years, she taught kindergarten at Maitland Elementary School in Morgan City, earning a master’s degree in early childhood education at the same time. After thirteen years as a kindergarten teacher, Ms. Taylor took advantage of a new challenge, teaching pre-kindergarten at the same school. In the year 1994 she married Donald P. McKoin, Jr. and moved to the New Orleans area, teaching pre-kindergarten in Plaquemines Parish for more than four years. When her husband’s health demanded that he no longer work, they moved back home to St. Mary Parish to be near family and friends. The author returned to teaching pre-kindergarten in St. Mary Parish for six years. She is now semiretired but keeps herself in the education loop by tutoring. The McKoins, who reside on the family property along Bayou Teche in Charenton, Louisiana, have rescued two dogs and four cats. Their pets, along with about a dozen outdoor cats and an occasional raccoon, opossum, and rabbit that stray onto their property, provide the author with numerous subjects for children’s books.
