About the Book
In “The Roads We Have Traveled: Vacation Memories,” Richard White collects his travel writings beginning with his first trip abroad to Spain in 1970 and concluding with his church mission trip to Costa Rica in 2008. The 48 travelogues include recollections and observations of visits to numerous states and foreign countries. This is also the story of personal growth, of a journey from college student to young married adult to a father with grown children. Throughout the book, White demonstrates his love of travel, writing, observation, history, culture, and memory, passions that he shares with his wife and has passed on to his children.
About the Author
As a boy, Richard White never stepped on a plane and spent almost every family vacation in the state of New Jersey, usually one week at the shore and one week at the family lake cottage. That all changed in 1970 during his sophomore year at Dartmouth, when he traveled to Spain for a study abroad program in Salamanca. His Spain experience and journal marked the beginning of a lifetime of travel and travel writings. White has devoted most of his professional career to higher education, serving since 1990 as the director of career services at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He lives in Madison, New Jersey with his wife, Kerstin, a native of Germany. Their children, Janine, Lisa, and Eric, live there part of the time, when they are not discovering their own roads to travel.
