About the Book

“Survival in a Sea of White” explores the story of Melissa Johnson, a young, single, African American public relations professional, who makes a career decision to move from her urban Pittsburgh environment to rural Détente, New Hampshire to work in the public relations office of the exclusive, predominantly white Jameson College in the mid-1980s. Little did she realize that her life was about to be turned upside down as she attempts to navigate an unwelcoming environment that tests her spiritual and emotional strength.
Surrounded more than ever by a daily dose of racial, gender, homophobic and liberal disharmony, Melissa is challenged, personally and professionally, to make some tough decisions. With strong friendships, prayer and music, Melissa prevails in maintaining her morals, ethics and integrity as she victoriously “survives in a sea of white.”

About the Author

Marcia Jones Cross has spent her professional career as a public relations manager and practitioner primarily at colleges and universities across the country. Since her childhood, Marcia has had a passion for writing poetry and short stories, some of which have been published in literary publications. “Survival in a Sea of White” is Marcia’s first published novel. A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Marcia earned a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications from Clark Atlanta University and a master’s degree in Journalism from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is married to Barry Cross and they are the parents of two children, Evan and Dawn. Marcia resides in Riverdale, Georgia where she does freelance writing and public relations work.
