About the Book

Anyone that has been in education for any length of time has experienced a continuous reinventing of the wheel as the latest and greatest of “new” ideas is initiated as the latest panacea to pedagogical problems. There is no need for this. The classical educational theorists do not change and there is a reason for this: their philosophies are tried and true. They worked then and they work now. They only need to be adapted to the ever-evolving child. Current research has provided us with an understanding of the development of the brain and revealed that the greatest opportunities for child development arise around 2nd grade and middle school. Not surprisingly, these are also the most challenging years for educators. This book looks at this exciting period for intellectual growth and how these opportunities for educational development can best be used to benefit the child and ultimately society at large. The children in this picture in Venezuela I found extremely eager to learn often sitting in the street doing homework under the street lights of their own volition. Perhaps we Americans, as shown in the other picture, can make certain that no child anywhere is ever left behind.
