About the Book

THE TEST OF A NEST offers an appealing glimpse into creation of a bird family unit. It reflects the working together of mother and father to build the nest. It shows that biggest and brightest are not the most significant traits. The pair’s small, very plain baby bird becomes the most beautiful and important thing in the whole forest to them. Before Doris Walker authored a dozen books about California history and lore, she was a devoted mother. She surrounded her two sons with books, interweaving some of the stories she herself wrote for them. Then when they were students, Doris worked with their classes to stimulate reading and research skills. Brent is now a movie historian and author; Blair is a biomedical engineer. However, they still remember this story – THE TEST OF A NEST – as one of their childhood favorites. So she has dedicated its published form to them, and to her granddaughter Daisy Rose. The illustrations are by Warren Schepp.
