In January of 2005, amid violence and threats to boycott the results, Iraq held an election for its National Assembly, the country's first free election since 1953. In February, North Korea suspended it’s participation in multi-nation talks to discuss its arms program and officially admits to developing nuclear weapons. In March, Terri Schiavo’s feeding tube was removed at the request of her husband, fueling a nationwide debate about her. In September, Apple Computer announced iTunes 5 and The State of Israel officially declared an end to military rule in the Gaza Strip after 38 years of occupation. In November, Microsoft's Xbox 360 gaming console was due to debut in North America. At least 1,836 are killed, and severe damage was caused along the U.S. Gulf Coast by Hurricane Katrina. The 2005 Kashmir earthquake killed about 80,000 people and The Trials of Saddam Hussein began. In December, The United Nations Climate Change Conference was held in Montreal, Quebec. While, in November, surgeons in France carried out the first human face transplant. In 2005, London was hit by Islamic terrorist bombings, killing 52 and wounding about 700. It was Britain's worst attack since World War II. Jeff Gordon won his third Daytona 500 and Apple Computer announced iTunes 5. Sadly, Richard Pryor, Johnny Carson, Eddie Albert, and Anne Bancroft died in 2005. I was working on my fifth book as I drank beer on the patio and listened to the blues. I jotted down rhymes and tunes that flew out of my head and on to pieces of beer boxes and Post It’s. I stuffed them in a folder until I could sit down and type them out. Would anyone like them? I wasn’t sure but they kept flowing out on to the paper. To tell you the truth, I had a “Shadow Of A Doubt.”
About the Author
Brian K. Smith graduated from College Of The Mainland on a Journalism scholarship. While attending College Of The Mainland he served as Vice President of the Phi Theta Kappa. He also attended University of Houston at Clear Lake, pursuing an English degree. He was editor of his college newspaper and was known for his editorial cartoons. Brian received awards from the La Marque, Houston and Galveston press associations. He was also published in a collection of works with Vassar Miller, a Pulitzer Prize winner. Brian is also working on another book of poetry, a children’s book, and a novel. This is Brian’s sixth book of poetry
