About the Author

After a career teaching English in North Dakota secondary schools and Valley City State University, Richard Betting taught English as a second language to Zhejiang Wanli University students, spring semester 2000, living on campus near Qiu Ga, China. Before that he participated in a 1999 Global Language Village summer camp with Chinese middle school students in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, south of Shanghai. Hayfield, his novel describing Rod Swan’s coming of age in Hayfield, North Dakota, was published in 2003. He is retired and lives with his wife along the Sheyenne River in southeastern North Dakota.
