About the Book

The author looks back at the past seventy-five years in the context of his own life and Foreign Service career, recording his impressions of the era’s key political and security conflicts and his personal role in many of them, including Vietnam, Iran, Afghanistan and Israel. His observations about the international scene from the start of the Cold War to the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of a bipolar world -- some of which are at odds with conventional wisdom -- make fascinating reading.

About the Author

Born in California and educated at Colorado College and Berkeley, Hawthorne “Hawk” Mills spent most of his working life as a U.S. Foreign Service officer and international peacekeeping official. His public service career spanned the years of the Cold War, from 1945 as a young sailor in the Pacific to 1990 helping enforce the security provisions of the Egypt-Israel peace treaty. After his retirement, Hawk and his wife Diana settled on an island sheep farm in New Zealand. Their four children live in four different continents, which makes regular visits a challenge.
