About the Author

I was born in the tiny town of Bremen, Ga. into an upper middle class family with strong conservative views. Despite my early bouts with depression, I had what I consider to be a fairly happy childhood. When I look back on those years, I’m reminded of how simple and undemanding my life was at that age and how especially easy it was for me to overcome, or brush off, life’s little disappointments and letdowns. It wasn't until about the age of fourteen, when the social pressures of adolescence mounted, that my depression became an all too painful reality and years after that before the problem was fully identified and addressed. Today I guard with vigor the knowledge I obtained as a result of my journey, careful not to lose sight of the long and winding road down which depression once steered me. True my condition robbed me of much of the joy associated with some of life's most exciting years, but in the end it was this same condition that led me to a new and better understanding of myself and consequently a greater appreciation of my life as a whole.
