About the Book

“I read Legacy of Deceit and felt truly transported back to Berkeley during turbulent times. I grew up in the bay area and found all the references to be eerily accurate. It is a good read. Thank you for sending it to me.” Ellen Grace “Anyone who knows Berkeley will enjoy walking those streets again under Yukic’s guidance. A good read.” Bruce Barthol “The only ‘deceit’ in this masterful mystery is in the marvelous sleight of hand in the plot Ms. Yukic weaves from past and present pieces of the gifts Berkeley the town and Berkeley the University gives to the world. These benefits include ecology, feminism and the productive, ongoing dialog between those who believe in Rousseauian natural property rights and the Calvinistic monied classes who believe that inherited wealth and ‘old boy’ connections reflect predetermined virtue. As always, Ms. Clarke's prose reaches the same heights as her heroine’s dazzling athleticism, intuition and wit. “Legacy of Deceit” is a ‘must read’ for mystery lovers and anyone looking for an exciting yarn with historic accuracy. I know, because I was there. Wendy Schlesinger, Master of Journalism, UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism Alameda County Women's Hall of Fame Inductee Chairman, Gardens on Wheels Association, Co-founder, People's Park, Berkeley Tenants Union Chairman, Women of the Free Future “This one is a stunner! I guarantee that A Legacy of Deceit will keep you from doing your usual chores. It is a classic page-turner! The suspense starts on page one and never lets up! Laurie Morgan, the young heroine, finds a diary that pitches her into the past, and Yukic deftly uses the device of the diary to transport us back and forth between time periods. We return to the Berkeley of the sixties and are immediately immersed in its complex history. But the pace is rapid throughout, the characters fascinating, and we are shocked and excited by Yukic’s imaginative ending.” —Mary H. Webb, author of The God-Hustlers Laurie Morgan has family problems. The beautiful blonde hippie discovered bludgeoned to death in a Berkeley apartment turns out to be her mother, not her aunt as she’d been told. Could her estranged father have been the murderer? As she delves deeper into this gruesome crime, other suspects emerge. The more answers Laurie uncovers, the more treacherous her search becomes. A Berkeley tale through-and-through, Legacy of Deceit celebrates the tradition of offbeat characters, society’s outcasts, and general wackiness that Berserk-eley has inspired. The author of ten mystery novels (including Murder in the Mist and Deadly Games), Eleanor C. Yukic resides in the San Francisco Bay Area.
