About the Author
Bernard S. Goldman, M.D., BSc, Med F.R.C.S.(C) trained in Toronto with Wilfred G. Bigelow and William T. Mustard, true pioneers of heart surgery in Canada. After 20 years at Toronto General Hospital he opened the Cardiac Surgical Unit at Sunnybrook and Women’s in 1989 and was later Chief of Surgery at that hospital. His professional life represents a generation intermediate between the founders of heart surgery in Canada and contemporary surgeons in practice. His own practice began with the advent of heart transplantation and coronary bypass. He is Editor of the Journal of Cardiac Surgery and Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto. His interest in surgical history stems directly from the influence of his mentors Wilfred Bigelow and Ronald Baird, both humble men of great achievement and fiercely dedicated to our Canadian heritage. Susan Bélanger, B.A., M.L.S., is a Research Associate, in the History of Medicine Program, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. A graduate of the University of Toronto, she spent several years as bibliographies editor for the Dictionary of Canadian Biography/Dictionnaire biographique du Canada, and then pursued her interest in health-related research and writing with the History of Medicine Program.
