The authors were born, grew up and resided in the 1930s in the colonial territory of British Guiana(Guyana), the only English speaking country in South America. They departed to USA for university education in the late 1950s.

Their past is reconstructed through vivid recollections. Glimpses of their rich and engaging families and community life can be seen in the activities, holiday celebrations and delicacies of their native land. The anecdotes are a gift to their descendants, a record of their heritage. They invite readers interested in colonial history to enjoy an enlightening, vicarious trip into the past. About the Author

Bios (back cover) Claire was born in British Guiana and is an American citizen. Holds degrees from Howard University, Columbia University, the Wharton School and Northwestern University. In 1999, published in the Journal of Gerontological Social Work, with co-author Marcia Bayne-Smith, PhD., “Quality of Life Satisfaction Among Black Women 75 years and Older.” 1994 traveled to Russia, consulted with the Russian Volunteer Movement. After 35 years in top-level management in human services retired to New Bern, NC with her husband, Samuel L. Combs, who retired after 43 years with the FAA. Founded The Neuse-Pamlico Sound Women’s Coalition, Inc., in 2002 in New Bern.. Paula Matthews Hazlewood born in British Guiana, obtained her early education there. Pursued her undergraduate and graduate education in the USA. Attended Wellesley College, Massachusetts graduating with a BA degree. Received MA degree from Boston University. Paula, retired from the New York City Education system after 27 years.. She is a contributor to CHIPS, a catholic welfare organization.. She is past president of Guyanese United Church Women in America, Brooklyn Chapter. She founded the Bishops’ High School (Guyana) Tristate Alumni Chapter. Paula is an exhibited artist.. She lives with her husband Dr. A. Ingram Hazlewood in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.
