“Puppets In School” is a guide to help teachers in using puppets to facilitate learning in students. Although the book addresses the work specifically to teachers, media specialists, and those who work with children, it provides a valuable resource for parents and those who are interested in puppetry. With a recent interest in “reenactment” to foster reading comprehension and literacy, puppetry is becoming more and more important as a vehicle to promote improved instruction in the classroom. This book explores the many facets of puppetry with specific information on how to create various kinds of puppets using readily available materials. It includes a brief history and development of puppetry “that has “entertained and educated people throughout the history of mankind.” It outlines methods for the reader to use puppets in their educational planning, creative projects and units of study.” The text covers many related topics necessary to promote the development of the imagination as well as to enlighten, motivate and entertain. It is a “hands on” manual to assist the reader to “learn by doing.” It provides for the teacher activities that involve the students and reinforces their learning modalities in a positive, happy, non-threatening classroom environment.

About the Author

Jim Jones, author, educator and founder of the “Jones Family Puppets,” brings an extensive background in Education and in puppetry to assist the reader in understanding and using puppets to promote creativity and “active learning” in the classroom. Jones’ career has spanned almost fifty years as a teacher, college professor, educational consultant, school principal and superintendent of schools. With his family of eight children, all of whom are seasoned professional puppeteers, Jones has brought his love of teaching children and performing with puppets to hundreds of audiences. In “Puppets In School,” the culmination of his life’s work is visibly demonstrated. It is a working text with many suggestions and ideas for the contemporary teacher.
