About the Book

This writing focuses on the coincidences in Thoreau’s life that led him to feel “especially guided and guarded,” as he said it in Walden. These synchronicities accompany his aspiration for an esoteric way of living that had been steadily coming to light in his Romantic English and American mentors, inspired by the new translations of the world’s bibles and verses. While Thoreau absorbed this perennial teaching in the study, he encountered its meaning in the field, meeting the trickster, the archetype of transformation and boundary breaking, in the faces of the wild among clouds, birds, flowers, arrowheads, lightning, and fires.
