About the Book

Synopsis Doba Talaley, a sixteen-year-old Jewish girl, raised on a farm in rural Russia in the early nineteen hundreds, crosses the ocean to America, hoping to realize her dream of freedom. She passionately wants the opportunity to grow and to find a life of adventure. Not having had the opportunity to learn to read or write either Jewish or Russian, she longs to become educated and to earn money and independence. Doba vows not to become involved in romance until she is well on her way to realizing her goals. She has just begun to achieve her dream when she meets Max, and they fall deliriously in love. Too soon, Doba becomes pregnant. Max has dreams too. Lonely, he wants a family and independence from “bosses.” He wants to own his business. Max or their children. We suggest: Each one possessing a sense of individuality and a strong personality, they marry and have children. This is a story of love and tenderness, frustration, conflict, rage, and great poignancy as they each struggle for resolution of their differences

About the Author

Soon after World War I ended, I was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a second daughter to a young immigrant family. From my earliest life, hearing stories delighted me. As soon as I learned to read and write, I told my own stories with pencil on paper. Later, after the end of World War II, my husband, children and I emigrated to Southern California. I entered college for the first time and achieved a B.A. in History and Literature, both stories about people. Now, with the loss of my husband, writing continues to be my love, my loyal companion, critic and my most appreciative and best listener.
