About the Author
I am an 85-year old unpublished poet, as well as a retired Doctor of Dental Surgery and a proud World War II veteran. I have written poetry as a hobby for many years and have recently assembled a collection of what I believe to be my best work. My poems range from contemplative to humorous observations, thoughts and impressions of people and events I’ve actually encountered in daily life, including my thus far successful battle against prostate cancer. Born in 1922, I was raised on the campus of a small, private college in the South. St. Paul’s College was founded in Virginia by my paternal grandfather. (He was also an archdeacon in the Episcopal Church). Growing up on the campus provided me with a somewhat sheltered and, indeed, relatively privileged childhood. As an African-American, however, I nevertheless frequently experienced the ugliness of racial segregation and blatant discrimination in the small town adjacent to the college. Many of those memories from my childhood and early adulthood are preserved in a number of my poems.
