Richard Martin Cowin was born and raised in Chicago’s south side and northern suburbs. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Illinois and several other colleges. He graduated from The Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine in 1980 with a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree. After becoming a pioneer in the field of minimally invasive and laser foot and ankle surgery techniques, he went on to receive his M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) degree as well as his Rabbinical Semicha of Ordination.
