In 1949, a young tango dancer witnesses the murder of a venerated sea captain. She escapes with her life, inadvertently becoming the fifth owner of a fabled piece of jewelry, a whale tooth called the Nakai Nakai. In 1963, a young field linguist, who has participated in the capture of a Japanese hermit commando, is in a plane crash. She escapes with her life, inadvertently becoming the owner of an ancient piece of high technology. The paths of these two women are destined to cross as each seeks to live in peace, in spite of those who want to recover the precious objects. Sailors, detectives, musicians, a fugitive monk, and an aging drug smuggler are all brought into play. Before it’s over, the lives of a talented psychotherapist and a legendary Hawaiian argonaut will be changed forever.
