About the Book
Once upon a time there was a mighty Assyrian king, Gilgamesh. He was the king of the ancient Assyrian city of Uruk. King Gilgamesh lived in a big, beautiful palace and had many servants and soldiers defending him, but he was unhappy and no one loved him. He had no friends, family, wife or children to love him. The people of Uruk did not love their king either. Gilgamesh was mean, stubborn, and not very kind.
About the Author
Ann-Margret, also known as Maggie Yonan, is an Assyrian from Iraq. She was born and raised in Baghdad but moved to the United States with her family in 1966. She attended Morton Grove Elementary, Parkview Junior High, and Niles West High School in Illinois. As a young girl, she wrote short stories and poetry and some of her poems were published in the Assyrian Star magazine. In 1980 Ann moved to California and attended the California State University, Northridge, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Sociology. She is the author of numerous articles and the producer of many educational programs for Assyrian Television. She is better known for broadcasting educational, cultural, and historical shows on KBSV, AssyriaSat, Global Assyrian Television Network from 1998-2006. Ann has been a political activist for more than twenty years, writing and lecturing about the fate of the Assyrian community. Some of her articles have been published in Zinda Magazine, and others can be found on her website, www.speakassyria.org. Gilgamesh is her first attempt at writing children’s books and her main purpose is to introduce Assyrian children to their ancient Assyrian culture and religion. She is currently working on a series of children’s books. Ann resides in California and can be reached by e-mail through her website.
