THING COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE The year of 1993, a great tragedy happened to me. I got up early like I always did. When I looked out the door, I needed a light to see. Man, it was dark, like it was midnight twice. I went in the bathroom to take a shower, ‘cause that old clock on the wall was saying that I only had one hour. I hurried and eat so I could brush my teeth ‘cause I still had to put some shoes on my feet. It is summertime now, and the days are long. Therefore, I always like to start early so I could get back home. I said to Janie, “Wake up now and close the door, ‘cause it is fi ve o’clock and I have got to go.” She said, “Be careful walking down to your job to get your truck ‘cause if someone hurt you, boy, you may not be able to work.” I said, “Okay,” and walked out the door, just like I did the day before. I got in my truck and began to drive, when I arrived it was 5:45 in a little town called Hemingway, South Carolina. I usually go and stay all day. This day, I made real good time; everything went along just fi ne. It is four o’clock now, and I’ve got to go. Things went along all right. I have only two more. If everything had continued to go all right, I would have been home long before night. But things did not work out as best they could, I had an accident and I was badly burned.
