I have to start by saying there really wasn't any one thing that got me working out here; no, there had been many things that drew me into clamming on the Great South Bay. I knew that I could never be far from the water. The beauty that surrounded this environment was enough to make anyone want to be a part of it. Watching the different seasons out here on the bays and coves could be breathtaking, as could the sunrises, sunsets, and the whitecaps when it was rough. All you needed to do was look around. The scenery was always quite awesome. Just the fact the job kept me outdoors and around boats would have probably been enough, but the water had so many things to offer. I looked forward to the challenge each morning brought, knowing each day held a new conquest. There were no promises sitting out here, just the challenge of having to find the clams and beat the elements to catch them. It was a dare most diggers couldn't shy away from. You counted on your strength and knowledge to make it out here.

About the Book
After spending more of his youth tugging on clam rakes than he did in classrooms, and most of his adult years dealing with the not so honest characters of New York City’s toughest fish markets, Evert Bay Scott decided to write of it. He wanted to tell of his life and take his readers out there with him, along the shores of Long Island. Mr. Scott takes you on board telling about the run-ins, characters and con men that he came to know on the darker side of the clamming game; the side he wound up on. So hold on tight, this adventure on the Great South Bay is about to set sail!
