About the Author

Kenneth Ward: 56 years old. I grew up in Detroit; MI. Detroit is a racially polarized city, but it’s getting better. Slavery has always been a perplexing part of our history. We were made slaves, whether we wanted to be or not. At the time of slavery, the United States was an economically up and coming nation, and they wanted free labor. Most whites hated us for no reason. But sometimes whites have a reason to dislike blacks. That is why I wrote about J.R. He had a reason to hate black men, because his family was massacred by black men. But, he loved black women because he was saved by one. Many whites moved out of Detroit. Detroit was a beautiful city in the early 1960’s and before. They are angry because they feel that blacks have destroyed the city. That’s one of the reasons why my city is racially polarized. When I was a child, I would here songs like, “All you need is Love” or, “Come on people now, smile on your brother, everybody, get together, try to love one another, right now. And with a child’s mind, I actually thought it was happening. And a few months later, the “Detroit Riots” happened; and the next year, Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy were assassinated. I was saddened because I realized that the world was not walking together in love, and was not coming together. But later that very same year, the Detroit Tigers won the World Series, and blacks and whites were dancing in the streets, like the Martha and the Vandellas song. And my 12 year old mind thought, there is hope. My biggest hope and prayer, is that one day, the world will be color blind.
