After Linda fell asleep, her sadness dried up when she saw that beautiful face that she had been dreaming about for a long time. It was the face of a goddess with black hair and green eyes. Just as she was reaching out for her, the face vanished but before the sadness returned; she woke up rather abruptly.
The next morning, Mike slipped into Linda's room before she was awake. He took one of her extra wigs and got it nice and wet but not enough so it was dripping wet. He put just enough conditioner on it so it was nice and slimy. He dropped it right on her face and rubbed it in a little while making a loud growling noise. Mike jumped back by the doorway and just watched. The effect was as expected. Linda woke up screaming and flailing around in her bed. She kept screaming: "GET IT OFF!!!" along with other unintelligible screams.
Mike just watched for a few seconds and ran downstairs. Ann and Harry were in the kitchen having coffee. Harry was reading the morning paper and Ann was getting the lesson ready for school. They both heard Linda screaming and as expected, Mike came running through the room and into the kitchen. He poured a quick cup of coffee and sat down like nothing was happening. The three of them saw Linda running down the stairs and into the kitchen holding something wet in her hand.
Linda: "Where is that little rat!!??"
She saw Mike just sitting there drinking his coffee.
Mike: "Linda, what's wrong?"
Linda threw the wet wig at him and yelled: "Don't give me that innocent routine. I'll get you for this!"
Mike dodged the wig easily as it made a loud “splat” on the floor. Linda stomped back upstairs as Mike picked up the wig and held it out for Ann and his father to see.
Mike: "She really hates those wigs. Look at what she did to this one."
Harry: "Don't give me that. Throw that thing away. It's no good anymore. Stop ruining those things. They're not cheap and we still may need them! I wish you two could coexist for just a little while without tormenting each other."
Mike looked at his father with the most innocent face and said: "Me? I do my best to work with her. She's the one that is wound a little too tight.”
Harry: "Ann, when will they stop?"
Ann chuckled and said: "I suspect never, Harry. Get used to it."
Harry just said: "Crap!" and walked into the living room with his news paper. Mike sat down next to Ann. He had already cleaned up and was ready so they just waited for Linda.
Ann: "Mike, Kris's father called me early this morning. He is still angry with Kris. He told me that she is grounded for a month. She is not allowed to step outside unless the house is on fire. He said that if we can't have school at their house for the month, he will send her back to public school."
Mike looked at Ann with a worried face and said: "Ann! We can't let that happen. I will never see her again!"
Ann smiled and said: "Mike, you would still see her but don't worry. We will have school at her house for the month."
Mike hugged Ann and said: "Thank you, Ann. Thank you."
Ann pushed Mike away and asked: "Why did Kris run away like that?"
Ann already suspected why she did but she wanted to know what Mike knew about it.
Mike: "I am not sure. I guess it started with the TV and got worse from there. She told her parents that she was eighteen and could do what she wanted to. Her father told her that as long as she lived under his roof, she would do what she was told to do. So she left. Ann, I was so worried. I looked all over and couldn't find her in any off the normal spots. If it wasn't for Denny's training, I never would have found her and no one else would have either."
Ann: "How did Denny's training help?"
Mike: "It was something that he told me once. He said, "Mike, if you have a problem, you must eliminate all the possibilities one at a time. If you still do not have the answer, look at what's left. Whatever is left, however improbable must be the truth!" That never made any sense until last night. He also told me to never let my emotions rule my decisions or I would lose the fight every time. He told me to be logical and analyze the fight carefully before you move."
Ann: "This Denny sounds like a smart man. It is too bad that he is involved with those gangs."
Mike: "I am not sure that it is a bad thing, Ann. I believe he keeps those gangs under control. It sounds weird but they have a code that they live by. They follow their code without exception. That is the reason that they took me in. They despise people that attack women, children or the weak. They believe those type of people are cowards and they hate cowards. The day that Linda was first attacked in school, they heard about what I did. I tried to help even though I was outmatched. They respected me for that."
Ann: "I see. Well, I think this Denny of yours did some good after all. I believe that Linda is safe as long as you're nearby. Let's get Linda and get going. It's getting late. Joan will meet us there."
