About the Book

Out of the Thunder/Sunlight in Winter Rain is Velma Bank’s first book of poetry. Her book is a collection of love poems centered on different types of love and nature themes. It speaks of love for family and friends, and even love for strangers. Her poems reflect on platonic love, lost love, unrequited love, and most importantly, God’s redeeming love. She writes directly from her heart with a keen awareness not only of her own life’s accidents and tragedies, but also from experiences involving the pain and suffering of others. Her poetry offers help to those who hurt. In her poems, an element of redemption is depicted in all types of love, with the ultimate focus on God’s love. “Sunlight in Winter Rain” is symbolic of God’s healing presence throughout the universe.

About the Author

Velma Banks, the granddaughter of a Baptist preacher, is a poet and free lance writer residing in Little Rock, Arkansas. She holds degrees in Biology and Nursing from McPherson College and the University of Kansas . Her early interest in poetry was sparked when she attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville during her freshman year and continued at McPherson College where she took an interest in literature and creative writing. Since her career goals were in biology, nursing, and allied health, she didn’t find time to pursue interest in writing. She also received a graduate degree in Education from the University of Missouri in Kansas City. She is not a stranger to life tragedies and suffering having claimed victory in living in spite of loosing someone she cared about during a time of war. Following a traumatic automobile accident, her family was told she would not live until the next morning. After she managed to survived, they received another grave prognosis that she would never be able to walk again. Against all odds, she survived and totally recovered from a head on collision with a Missouri highway truck. However, she didn’t know she would meet her greatest challenge in life when she later adopted and raised a special needs child as a single parent. Velma Banks is a Registered Nurse who is a lifelong learner currently working toward a PHD in Psychology based on competency and life experience.
