About the Book

“One lovely day in Africa” explores various topics such as love, struggle, soul searching, guilt, God and even politics. The book is named after one of the poems in the book. This poem calls for unity in Africa, a cease to all the wars and bitterness. Another poem titled “When shall it rain again” talks about a drought or a famine. Africa is the continent that is referred to in that. Most of the poems in the book are not about Africa. Universal topics such as love also have a part in the collection. Poems like “American Bandito”, “A spontaneous love poem”, “Beautiful moon”, all deal with the topic of love. Love is seen as a positive influence in those poems. Other poems like “Soul guide” deal with soul searching. The poem “A soldier’s prayer,” is militant, rebellious and at the same time, tender and gentle. It deals with war. It’s perspective is that war should never be the case unless there is no other solution left on the face of the earth. The topic of death is explored when you read a poem like “Ode to the Casket”. Defeat and hope are both explored when you read “My concession”. “My concession” at first, gives the impression of hopelessness, but at the end, there is hope for the character there. Anybody that has ever felt down will enjoy this one. The poem “Tale of a bird”, takes a stand for women, especially the ones that are beaten up by their mates. Women would love this one. We are brothers, raised in Africa in the thick of all the troubles and struggles that go on there. But out of that rubble, we’ll write about love, victory, success and hope that the world hears us. Chuks still resides in Nigeria while Andrew has been here in the United States for some years now. This is our first anthology. We hope you enjoy reviewing and evaluating these poems. We are waiting to hear from you. Thank you Andrew Madueke Chuks Madueke
