Some families have relatives they don’t espcially like to talk about, someone with a thorny past stored away in the closet of memory.

For Barbara Jean and her family, and certainly for her parents Martha and Howard, her wandering brother Doyle, the ex-con, was no saving grace.

But for Danny, her 11-year-old loudmouthed son, the heroic daydreamer and slayer of dragons, the artiste, Uncle Doyle’s visit to their household in that tumultuous summer of 1960 was just so right.

And that was just the beginning of a very fine, poignant and humorous mess. One that only a dragon slayer could conquer as long as the big folks didn’t get in the way.

Buzzcut Summer is the story of one boy’s very rude awakening: the world of adults with their unspoken regrets and unfinished business, hazardous baseball and the inevitable on-rush of puberty. What’s a summer for, anyway?
